Methodology:

No data analyses were done beyond that described in adapting the data from the original: The data were converted to degrees Fahrenheit and the base period was changed from 1951-1980 to 1980-2015.

Monthly averaged global temperature data were plotted on a graph that had months of the year on the x-axis and temperature change on the y-axis. Each year from 1880 to 2017 were plotted in a different color that progressed from gray to blue to purple to red. Years that were the warmest on record at the time they occurred were recorded on the right side of the graph.

How the source was modified: Global mean surface land+ocean temperature were downloaded in degrees Celsius from https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/. The data were converted to degrees Fahrenheit and the base period was changed from 1951-1980 to 1980-2015.
