Indicator: Arctic Glacier Mass Balance
This figure appears in the Indicator: Arctic Glacier Mass Balance report.
This figure shows the cumulative change in mass balance of a set of eight Arctic glaciers located at a latitude of 66°N or higher with data beginning in 1945. The time-series is adjusted to make 1970 a common zero point since this was the first year for which mass balance data is available for all eight glaciers. Negative values indicate a net loss of ice and snow compared with the base year of 1970. For consistency, measurements are in meters of water equivalent, which represent changes in the average thickness of a glacier. The map provides the location of each glacier and the Arctic circle (dotted line) for reference.
