Storage Levels in Elephant Butte Reservoir

Figure 31.5

North Carolina State University
Kenneth E. Kunkel

This figure appears in chapter 31 of the NOAA-led State Summaries 2019 report.

Monthly time series of the average water storage levels in the Elephant Butte Reservoir (March 1915–May 2019). Water storage levels in the reservoir have varied widely over the years. Water storage levels were generally low, and in some cases nearly zero, from the late 1940s to early 1980s. Following high levels during the 1980s and 1990s, a large decline occurred in the early 21st century in response to severe drought conditions. In 2004, 2013, and 2018, storage levels approached record lows due to the extended drought. Source: USBR.
