Model Simulation of Total Carbon Storage in U.S. Grasslands, 2016
This figure appears in chapter 10 of the Second State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR2): A Sustained Assessment Report report.
(a) Spatial mean of carbon density in stocks over the 2005–2050 simulation period (red bar, 2016). (b) Number of pixels across the range of carbon density for 2016. (c) Total carbon storage in soils and vegetation for grasslands of the conterminous United States, simulated using the Erosion-Deposition-Carbon-Model (EDCM). Model simulations started in 1992 with initial soil carbon data from the Soil Survey Geographic database (SSURGO) and future climate projection from the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC; Liu et al., 2012a; Liu et al., 2014; Zhu et al., 2011). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) net primary production products from 2001 to 2011 were used to constrain EDCM simulations, and the inverse model parameter values were used for future projections. Key: g C, grams of carbon.
