The soil and vegetation carbon pools are represented by the range of carbon densities (minimum to maximum) among Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Annual carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes (arrows) are represented by a 95% confidence interval; a negative flux indicates a transfer of carbon from the atmosphere to the ecosystem. Stocks and fluxes are in grams of carbon (g C) per m2. [Data sources: Table 13.1, p. 514, and Appendices 13A and 13B, p. 547 and p. 557, respectively.]
